Make it stand out
Our goat journey started in 2005 when Gracie, a 2 year old Pygmy (?) doe came to our farm to be a buddy for our horse whose pasture mate had recently died. I was away at college, so my family cared for the farm. We knew absolutely nothing about goats back then, we were not a “goat” family. Gracie was not tame AT ALL. For the first several years it was a struggle to catch her, and she would not come to us even for treats. As the years went on, she warmed up to us finally, and loved head scratches. Gracie got no special goat feed, she ate horse hay and grain, and I would trim her feet when I came back from school breaks, and that was about it. While we did eventually get another horse, Gracie was our only goat for 12 years. We had no idea that goats needed another goat buddy, which looking back should have been obvious. She got into chicken feed all the time, she never respected fences, and she would follow me all over the neighborhood on horseback trail rides. It was probably sheer luck that she lived to the age of 14. When I moved back home, she was a little old lady, but we did get to spend her last few years together. I still wasn’t into goats, but I did love her very much.

Before Gracie passed away at around 14 years old, I was sitting with her quietly in her stall knowing we were in our final moments together, and she pressed her forehead gently against mine. A gentle thank you. That moment is etched on my heart forever.
